Brewers since 1892
The brewery first appears in records in the trading register of 1892 as "Brasserie Célestin De Geyter, 53 Dorp". The founder of the company was not Célestin, however, but Maria-Theresia De Geyter. The residence attached to the brewery, dates from 1885.
Célestin De Geyter was married twice. In addition to being a brewer, he was also a member of the provincial council and the mayor of Beerlegem.
In 1925, the brewery is listed as "Brasserie De Geyter-Droesbeke".
Célestin's sons, Joseph en Richard, followed their father into the business. In 1940, the brewery was known as "Brasserie De Geyter - frères." The brewery produced the following beers: Bock, Export, Brown Bruno, Pils Malta table beer, Samson. For a while, the company also brewed "Hengsten" beer, which was bottled in champagne bottles.
The brothers shut the brewery down in 1952. Jaques De Geyter continued to sell beer from other brewers until 1957. In 1991, a large part of the brewery was demolished. (Source: www.didier-snauwaert.be/De Klaroen) |
